PUMA Air Conditioning Kits: Bringing Modern Climate Control to the Defender 90, 110 and 130

The Land Rover Defender is known for its rugged character and mechanical simplicity, but older models were not always designed with the level of cabin comfort expected from a modern vehicle. PUMA Air Conditioning Kits offer a practical way to add powerful heating and air conditioning to the Defender 90, 110 and 130 while keeping the system compact and discreet. Designed around a dual-core HVAC system, the kit combines a high-output air conditioning system with a powerful heater in one integrated unit.
A major advantage of the PUMA system is its compact engine-bay installation. Instead of taking up valuable space inside the cabin, the HVAC unit is mounted unobtrusively in the engine bay. This helps preserve interior legroom while also reducing the amount of blower and HVAC noise reaching the occupants. For a Defender that sees long-distance driving, touring, or regular use in hot climates, this combination of cabin comfort and efficient packaging can make a significant difference.
Dual-Core Heating and Air Conditioning
The system provides between 10,500 and 13,500 BTU of air conditioning and heating capacity, depending on the configuration. An adjustable thermostat allows the system to be controlled for both summer cooling and winter heating, making it suitable for year-round use.
Air movement is handled by a three-speed centrifugal blower capable of delivering up to 319 CFM. The adjustable fan speeds allow occupants to control airflow according to cabin conditions, while the included lower dash vents help distribute conditioned air into the interior. The vents are designed around the OEM dashboard and are supplied in black as standard, with additional color options available.
Complete HVAC Hardware
Rather than supplying only the main heater and air conditioning unit, the PUMA kit includes the major components required to build a complete system. The package includes the compressor, engine mount, drive belt and pulley, along with a condenser radiator, push fan and associated fittings.
The kit also includes #6, #8 and #10 air-conditioning hoses with fittings, a drier bottle with mounting clamp, pressure switch, electrical wiring, relays and switch connectors. A water control heater valve and 16mm water hose are included for the heating side of the system.
The supplied pipe fittings feature R-134a charge points and require crimping to the piping during installation. Because of this, the installation requires the appropriate crimping tool and should be carried out by someone familiar with automotive air-conditioning systems.
OEM-Style Dashboard Controls
The PUMA kit is designed to integrate neatly with the Defender’s original dashboard layout. An integrated dashboard control panel is supplied in black as standard, while cream, blue, red, yellow, white, orange and forest green options are available by contacting the sales team.
Adjustable lower dash vents are also supplied in the same range of color choices. For TD5 models built after 2002, the dashboard arrangement is different: no dashboard plate is supplied, and the kit instead includes the TD5 air-conditioning switch, small round rocker heater switch and blower dial.
Defender Fitment and TD5 Considerations
PUMA Air Conditioning Kits are designed for Defender 90, 110 and 130 applications, providing a useful climate-control upgrade for these classic and utility-focused vehicles. However, installation requirements can vary depending on the Defender model and engine configuration.
TD5 models require particular attention because of limited space around the condenser. An extender grille is required to provide sufficient clearance for the condenser installation. This is an important consideration when planning the conversion and should be accounted for before installation begins.
Each PUMA system is custom made, with a stated 10-day build lead time. With its combination of heating, high-output air conditioning, compact engine-bay packaging and OEM-style dashboard controls, the system offers Defender owners a comprehensive way to improve cabin comfort without sacrificing the vehicle’s practical interior space.
