The Land Rover Defender Gets a Pickup Truck Makeover — and a New One Is Coming in 2026

Few nameplates in the automotive world have evolved as successfully as the Land Rover Defender. Once a rugged, utilitarian off-roader, the modern Defender lineup has become a sophisticated yet highly capable family of SUVs, available in 90, 110, and 130 variants. It combines British craftsmanship with serious off-road heritage — but one thing has been missing from the mix: a pickup truck version.

That gap is now being filled — not by Land Rover itself, but by two independent coachbuilders from Europe under the same corporate umbrella: Heritage Customs and Urban Automotive. Together, they’ve unveiled the world’s first coach-built Defender pickups, each bringing a unique vision of what the Defender could be when transformed into a lifestyle pickup.

Both creations start life as the Defender 130, the longest and most spacious member of the Defender lineup. Beneath the hood sits a potent V8 engine producing 419 horsepower, ensuring that these bespoke builds retain the Defender’s impressive off-road credentials and road presence. While no mechanical changes have been confirmed, the focus here is on design craftsmanship — not brute force.

The Heritage Customs Defender Pickup, unveiled in the Netherlands on October 30, embodies elegance and classic charm. Dubbed the Valiance Pickup, it carries the brand’s signature “authentically classic” styling, merging Defender’s timeless DNA with refined luxury details. The cabin has been shortened to make room for a compact but beautifully integrated truck bed, resulting in a clean, balanced profile that looks factory-built.

In contrast, Urban Automotive’s Defender Pickup takes a more aggressive, performance-oriented approach. While only revealed digitally for now, the design promises muscular fender flares, bolder body lines, and Urban’s signature aero-styling cues. The physical debut is scheduled for July 2026 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it’s expected to draw massive attention from enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Pricing details remain under wraps, but based on Heritage Customs’ previous builds — such as last year’s Defender 130 X-Dynamic SE-based Valiance Pickup priced at $178,000 — it’s safe to assume these bespoke conversions won’t come cheap. That figure is nearly three times the price of a standard Defender, but exclusivity comes at a cost.

For now, the Defender pickup remains a rare sight — a fusion of British design heritage and modern craftsmanship. It’s a bold reinterpretation of a legend, and proof that even in a market dominated by SUVs, there’s still room for something truly unique. Expect the 2026 debut to push the boundaries even further.
